The Winter Solstice Series was initiated in response to a suggestion from my painting teacher, John Murray, that we do a piece of work inspired by the clarity and balance of the winter solstice. I responded to the assignment, finding much in the quiet and peace of the monochromatic palate and relative absence of gesture. It was calming and meditative to me, a welcomed relief to the turbulence we were experiencing at home (college applications)! Often my work directly reflects my emotions, but in this case, the work conveyed a desire to simplify, to settle down the anxiety and breathe. Inevitably, as the series progressed, gesture (stress?) returned to the canvases.
